What Is a Gua Number? Personal Feng Shui Directions Explained

In the previous article, we explored the Bagua as an energetic map of space. But a home is not experienced by a floor plan. It is experienced by people.

This introduces an important question: does the same direction affect everyone in exactly the same way?

In personal Feng Shui, the answer is no. Different people can have different relationships with the same directions. One of the traditional ways of exploring these relationships is through the Gua number.

Your Gua number provides a personal reference point that can be used to identify directions considered more supportive or less supportive for you. At Your Feng Shui Partner, this information becomes one of the bridges between the person and the property.

What Is a Gua Number?

A Gua number — sometimes written Kua number — is a personal Feng Shui number associated with one of the eight trigrams of the Bagua.

In traditional Eight Mansions Feng Shui, the Gua number is used to establish a person's relationship with the eight principal compass directions: North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, Southwest, West and Northwest.

Four of these broad directions are traditionally considered more favorable for the person, while four are considered less favorable.

The important point is that the Gua number does not describe the property itself. It introduces the person into the Feng Shui analysis.

The Bagua describes the space.
Your Gua number helps describe your personal relationship with directions within that space.

How Is Your Personal Gua Determined?

The traditional calculation uses birth information together with gender. Different conventions may require particular attention around the beginning of the Chinese solar year, so simply using a Western calendar year without considering the calculation method can occasionally produce a different result.

At Your Feng Shui Partner, you enter the person's birth details and gender in the Personal Bagua tool. The system then calculates the person's Gua number and corresponding Feng Shui element.

Rather than making the arithmetic itself the focus, we are more interested in what the resulting Gua tells us and how it can be used practically.

Your Gua Number and the Five Elements

Each Gua is associated with one of the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water.

This creates another connection with the ideas explored in What Are the Five Elements in Bazi?. The Five Elements are not limited to Bazi. They also provide an important language for understanding relationships and transformations in Feng Shui.

However, knowing your personal element does not mean that you should simply fill your home with that element. As with other Feng Shui techniques, the context matters.

The East Group and the West Group

The personal Gua numbers are traditionally divided into two groups.

The East Group contains Gua numbers 1, 3, 4 and 9. Their four favorable broad directions are:

North, South, East and Southeast.

The West Group contains Gua numbers 2, 6, 7 and 8. Their four favorable broad directions are:

Northeast, Southwest, West and Northwest.

This gives us the first broad level of personal directional analysis.

At this level, people belonging to the same group share the same four broad favorable directions. But this does not mean that every part of each 45-degree direction necessarily has to be treated identically when we increase the precision of the analysis.

The Four Favorable Personal Directions

Traditional Eight Mansions Feng Shui distinguishes four favorable directional qualities for each Gua:

• Sheng Qi — commonly associated with growth, vitality and advancement.
• Tian Yi — traditionally associated with health, support and recovery.
• Yan Nian — associated with relationships, harmony and continuity.
• Fu Wei — associated with stability, focus and personal grounding.

The exact compass direction corresponding to each quality depends on your Gua number.

This adds another level of personalization within the broader East Group or West Group framework.

What About the Other Four Directions?

The remaining four broad directions are traditionally classified as less favorable. They are also differentiated into four qualities rather than being treated as one identical category.

This does not mean that you should become afraid of half of your home, avoid entering a room, or assume that something negative must happen whenever you face one of these directions.

A direction can be less supportive from the perspective of your personal Gua, while the room itself may have other positive characteristics. Its location, external environment, Flying Stars, purpose, layout and the way you actually use it may all matter.

A personal direction is an influence — not a prediction.

Directions Are Different from Areas

This distinction is important.

When we say that Northwest is favorable for someone, we may be talking about a direction to face or orient yourself toward.

When we say that a particular room or sector of a property is lucky for that person, we are talking about the person's relationship with an area of the property.

These ideas are related, but they should not automatically be treated as identical.

Using Your Personal Directions for Your Bed

The bedroom is one of the most practical places where personal directions can be considered.

When possible, the orientation of the bed can be compared with the person's more supportive directions. The direction associated with the head while sleeping is particularly relevant in this type of analysis.

But this does not mean that a bed should automatically be rotated simply because a calculator identifies a favorable direction.

The physical layout still matters. A strong headboard, sensible relationship with doors and windows, comfortable circulation and the overall quality of the room should not be sacrificed just to obtain a particular compass bearing.

Using Your Personal Directions for Your Desk

A desk provides another practical application.

Here we can consider the direction you face while working, studying or making important decisions. Depending on the person's Gua and objectives, one of the supportive directions may be preferred when the room allows it.

Again, direction is not the only consideration. The quality of the position, what is behind you, what is in front of you, the room itself and the larger Feng Shui of the property remain relevant.

Do not improve one Feng Shui parameter by creating three new problems.

From 8 Broad Directions to More Precise Guidance

Many personal Gua calculators stop with the eight main compass directions. Each of these directions covers a broad sector of approximately 45 degrees.

At Your Feng Shui Partner, we can work with greater directional precision by dividing each of these broad directions into three smaller 15-degree sectors.

For example, North can be represented as:

N1     N2     N3

This finer division allows us to distinguish between three levels in our personal-direction display:

• ★ Highly Favorable — a particularly supportive direction.
• Favorable — a supportive direction.
• Non-Favorable — a direction that is less supportive for the person.

The yellow ★ therefore does not simply mean “preferred.” It identifies a direction that receives a particularly favorable classification within the more precise directional analysis.

For example, for an East Group person, North is one of the four favorable broad directions. In the finer YFP directional framework, N1, N2 and N3 may all receive the ★ Highly Favorable classification.

South remains favorable as a broad direction, while S2 can receive the ★ Highly Favorable classification and S1 and S3 remain Favorable.

The same principle applies to the other favorable directions.

8 directions establish the broad personal relationship.
More precise directional divisions refine the analysis.
★ identifies a Highly Favorable direction.

This hierarchy allows us to add precision without losing sight of the larger directional structure.

And even a ★ Highly Favorable direction should still be considered together with the property, the room, its purpose and the other Feng Shui influences present.

Highly Favorable does not mean that every other Feng Shui consideration should be ignored.

This reflects an important principle we use throughout Your Feng Shui Partner: begin with the larger energetic structure, then increase the level of precision when the situation requires it.

From Personal Directions to Personal Bagua

Your Gua number becomes especially useful when we bring it into the actual property.

In the YFP Personal Bagua tool, the system generates personalized Bagua information and directions for the selected person.

These personal parameters can then be used inside the Property Bagua analysis.

Once a property and person have been selected, the Bagua maps can be positioned over the property's floor plan. This allows the different sectors to be associated with actual rooms and areas of the home.

The question therefore evolves from:

“What are my favorable directions?”

to something much more practical:

“Where are these influences located in my actual home, and how can I work with them?”

Lucky Areas and Focus Areas Are Not the Same Thing

This is another distinction that is particularly important in the YFP approach.

A lucky area comes from the person's energetic relationship with the property, including information derived from the Personal Bagua.

A focus area, however, reflects what the person is trying to accomplish.

For example, someone may currently want to concentrate on career development, education, relationships or another personal objective. Those priorities can be registered through the YFP Personal Goals tool.

When the property is analyzed, we can therefore ask two different questions:

• Which areas are naturally more supportive for this person?
• Which areas deserve attention because of what this person currently wants to achieve?

Sometimes they overlap. Sometimes they do not.

That difference is useful information rather than a problem.

This is also where two people living in the same property can begin to have very different priorities. They may belong to the same East or West Group and therefore share the same broad favorable directions, while their current goals create different focus areas within the home.

In other words:

Your Gua helps us understand where the property may support you personally.
Your goals help us understand where you currently need to focus.

Adding the Property Back Into the Analysis

Personal Feng Shui should never make us forget the property itself.

As we explained in Big Feng Shui vs Small Feng Shui, Big Feng Shui always comes first.

Before worrying about whether a desk faces one personal direction or another, we should understand the larger energetic conditions reaching the property.

Then we can progressively add other layers:

Environment → Property → Bagua → Person → Goals → Other Influences → Conscious Action

Depending on the property and the depth of the analysis, other methods such as Flying Stars can add another layer of information.

This is why we do not believe that one favorable direction — or even one ★ Highly Favorable direction — can summarize the Feng Shui of an entire home.

Your Gua Number Is a Tool, Not a Verdict

A Gua number is useful because it adds a personal dimension to Feng Shui.

But it should not become another label that limits you.

It does not mean that you can only work successfully while facing one direction, that you cannot sleep well unless your bed is perfectly aligned, or that half of your home is forbidden territory.

The ★ Highly Favorable classification should be understood in exactly the same spirit. It gives us a finer level of information when several possibilities are available. It does not turn Feng Shui into a requirement for perfect 15-degree alignment.

Your Gua number gives us another piece of information.

And when that information is combined with the property, the room, your objectives and the other energetic influences present, it can help you make more informed choices.

Good Feng Shui is not about following more rules.
It is about understanding more influences.

From Personal Directions to the Compass

Your Gua number has now introduced the personal dimension of direction. But there is another question we need to explore: how do we position directional systems correctly inside a real property?

This brings us to the relationship between the Compass Bagua and the Doorway Bagua — two maps that use different reference points and can therefore reveal different perspectives on the same home.
