What Are the Ten Gods in Bazi? A Beginner's Guide

Once you understand your Day Master and the Five Elements, an important question naturally follows:

This is where the Ten Gods become especially useful.

Despite their name, the Ten Gods are not gods, deities or spiritual beings. They are a system for describing the different energetic relationships between your Day Master and the other energies in your Bazi chart.

Through these relationships, the Five Elements begin to acquire a more personal meaning.

What Are the Ten Gods?

In Bazi, your Day Master is the central reference point from which many relationships in the chart are interpreted.

The other elements can have five fundamental relationships with your Day Master:

• the same element as you,
• an element that produces or supports you,
• an element that you produce,
• an element that you control,
• an element that controls you.

Each of these five relationships can then appear in a Yin or Yang relationship to your Day Master.

The Ten Gods therefore emerge from the interaction between the Five Elements, Yin and Yang, and your Day Master.

The Five Families of the Ten Gods

Before looking at all ten individually, it is easier to understand them as five families.

These five families already tell us something fundamental about Bazi: the meaning of an element depends on its relationship to the Day Master.

The Companion Gods: Friend and Rob Wealth

Companion energy belongs to the same element as your Day Master.

It can therefore relate to themes such as identity, independence, confidence, peers, cooperation, competition and your relationship with people who operate on a similar level to you.

Friend

Friend energy can represent companionship, solidarity, independence, self-confidence and the ability to stand alongside others as an equal.

Depending on the chart and circumstances, the same energy can also strengthen attachment to one's own position or make compromise more difficult.

Rob Wealth

Rob Wealth also belongs to the Companion family, but expresses a different Yin-Yang relationship to the Day Master.

It can be associated with competition, ambition, networks, initiative, influence and the ability to act strongly among peers.

Its traditional name can sound negative, but this does not mean that Rob Wealth automatically causes someone to lose money.

The Resource Gods: Direct Resource and Indirect Resource

Resource is the element that produces the Day Master.

It therefore represents energy that comes toward you and can nourish, support or strengthen you.

Direct Resource

Direct Resource can be associated with learning, support, protection, knowledge, education, patience and the ability to receive and integrate information.

In some situations, too much reliance on Resource may also make it easier to remain in preparation, reflection or dependence rather than moving into action.

Indirect Resource

Indirect Resource can relate to less conventional ways of learning and understanding.

It may be expressed through intuition, unusual perspectives, imagination, specialized knowledge or the ability to perceive connections that are not immediately obvious.

Again, neither Direct nor Indirect Resource is inherently better. They represent different forms of the Resource relationship.

The Output Gods: Eating God and Hurting Officer

Output is the element produced by your Day Master.

If Resource represents energy coming toward you, Output represents something moving from you into the world.

It can therefore relate to expression, creativity, ideas, communication, productivity and what you create or contribute.

Eating God

Eating God can be associated with natural expression, creativity, enjoyment, production, talent and the ability to create something from your own energy.

Its traditional name should not be reduced simply to food or eating. It represents a much broader form of productive and expressive energy.

Hurting Officer

Hurting Officer can represent a more challenging, questioning or unconventional form of expression.

It may be associated with speaking one's mind, challenging established structures, innovation, critical thinking and refusing to accept something simply because it is expected.

This can be extremely valuable when expressed consciously, but the same energy can also create friction when expression becomes unnecessarily confrontational or dismissive of structure.

The Wealth Gods: Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth

Wealth is the element that your Day Master controls.

Because of this relationship, Wealth can be connected with themes such as management, responsibility for resources, practical results, possessions, opportunities and material matters.

Direct Wealth

Direct Wealth can be associated with structured management of resources, consistency, practical responsibility and a more stable approach to material matters.

It can describe an ability or tendency to work with resources in an organized and accountable way.

Indirect Wealth

Indirect Wealth can relate more strongly to opportunities, entrepreneurship, broader networks, commercial instinct and the ability to recognize or mobilize resources in less predictable situations.

But having Wealth energy in a chart does not automatically mean that someone will be rich.

The Power Gods: Direct Officer and Seven Killings

Power — sometimes also called Influence — is the element that controls your Day Master.

It can therefore relate to pressure, responsibility, discipline, boundaries, authority, expectations and the forces that require you to respond, adapt or develop.

Direct Officer

Direct Officer can be associated with structure, responsibility, discipline, rules, social expectations and the ability to operate within an organized framework.

In a constructive expression, it can support reliability, integrity and an appropriate relationship with responsibility and authority.

Seven Killings

Seven Killings — also known as Seven Killings or Seven Killers in different translations — has one of the most dramatic names in Bazi.

It should not be interpreted literally.

This energy can represent stronger forms of pressure, challenge, decisiveness, courage, urgency, competition and the ability to respond when circumstances demand action.

When well integrated, pressure does not necessarily destroy us. It can become one of the forces through which capability is developed.

Why Do the Ten Gods Have Such Strange Names?

Names such as Rob Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer and Seven Killings can sound alarming or mysterious when first encountered.

This is partly because they are traditional terms translated from Chinese metaphysical terminology.

The mistake is to interpret the English words too literally.

Hurting Officer does not mean that you will hurt an officer.

Rob Wealth does not mean that someone will rob you.

Seven Killings does not predict killing or death.

And Eating God is not simply about eating.

They are labels for energetic relationships.

Understanding the relationship behind the name is much more useful than becoming attached to the literal translation.

Every Day Master Has Its Own Ten Gods

This is one of the most important ideas to understand.

The Ten Gods are not fixed to one particular element.

Their identity changes according to the Day Master being used as the reference point.

For one Day Master, Fire may represent Output. For another, Fire may represent Resource, Wealth, Companion or Power.

The element itself has not changed.

What has changed is its relationship to the Day Master.

This is why the Day Master must remain the central reference point when interpreting the Ten Gods.

Where Do the Ten Gods Appear in a Bazi Chart?

The Ten Gods can appear throughout the Four Pillars.

The Heavenly Stems have direct relationships with the Day Master, while the Earthly Branches contain hidden stems that introduce additional relationships.

Their position also matters.

An energy appearing in one pillar is not necessarily interpreted in exactly the same way as the same energy appearing elsewhere.

This is why a Bazi reading should not simply count how many times each Ten God appears.

We also need to consider where it appears, how strong it is, what surrounds it and how it interacts with the rest of the chart.

Do You Need All Ten Gods in Your Chart?

No.

A natal Bazi chart does not need to display all ten relationships equally, and an apparently absent Ten God should not automatically be treated as something missing or defective.

Some relationships may be prominent.

Others may be subtle.

Some may become more noticeable when they are introduced through changing Luck Pillars or individual years.

Context remains essential.

Are Some Ten Gods Good and Others Bad?

No Ten God should automatically be classified as good or bad.

A name may sound positive while its expression becomes unhelpful in a particular chart or situation.

Another may sound negative while providing exactly the challenge, discipline or expression that is needed.

What matters is the relationship between the energy and the complete chart.

The Ten Gods and the Different Areas of Life

The Ten Gods help us explore many different dimensions of life.

Depending on the complete chart, their relationships can contribute to our understanding of areas such as:

These categories should never be interpreted from one Ten God alone.

The complete chart remains essential.

The Ten Gods Change With Luck Pillars and Years

Your natal Bazi chart is established at birth, but the energetic environment surrounding it continues to change.

Luck Pillars introduce additional energies over longer periods, while individual years introduce another changing layer.

Because every new Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch has a relationship with your Day Master, these changing energies can also introduce or emphasize different Ten Gods.

A relationship that is relatively quiet in your natal chart may therefore become more noticeable during a particular period.

This does not change your Day Master.

It changes the energetic circumstances interacting with it.

The Ten Gods as a Tool for Self-Awareness

The Ten Gods become particularly valuable when we stop treating them as labels and begin using them as a way to observe ourselves.

For example, we might ask:

• How do I receive support and knowledge?
• How naturally do I express what is inside me?
• How do I respond to competition?
• How do I manage resources and opportunities?
• How do I react to authority and responsibility?
• What happens when I experience pressure?

The purpose is not to decide that one Ten God makes us "good" and another makes us "bad".

The purpose is to recognize the energetic relationships we are living through and become more conscious of how we express them.

From Ten Gods to Self-Realization

In this way, even a challenging relationship can become meaningful.

You Are Not Your Ten Gods

Just as you are not simply your Day Master, you are not your Ten Gods.

They describe energetic relationships within your Bazi chart.

They do not define the totality of who you are.

Your complete Four Pillars, elemental structure, pillar relationships, Luck Pillars and changing years all contribute to the picture.

And Bazi itself is only one source of influence.

Start Exploring Your Own Ten Gods

When looking at your own chart, begin with the Day Master.

Then identify how the other energies relate to it:
